Gorgias Concise Syriac-English, English-Syriac Dictionary
Brock, Sebastian P. and George A. Kiraz
Piscataway, NJ: Gorgias, 2015 pp. x + 444. $48.00
Description: This Concise Syriac-English, English-Syriac Dictionary is the first two-way dictionary for Syriac and English, and is designed to be both a convenient academic resource for Classical Syriac and a door into the world of Modern Literary Syriac and Kthobonoyo. The 13,000 entries in the Syriac-English section provide a handy and practical tool for reading all but the most specialized Classical Syriac texts. The dictionary contains words and word meanings not found in earlier dictionaries. Technical words from the grammatical and liturgical traditions are marked as such, and Kthobonoyo words and meanings are also marked. Difficult and unusual verb forms, especially weak forms, are listed alphabetically and under their respective root.
The English-Syriac section opens up the opportunity for scholars to compose Syriac texts and to participate in modern Syriac liturgies. New uses of classical Syriac are marked, and a short section on Syriac ecclesiastical phrases and etiquette is included, along with an explanation of numbers and dates.
